The Seagull nebula (or IC2177) is located on the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major about 7.5 degrees northeast of Sirius. The nebulosity spans a very large area (120x40 arcmin) and is thus a good object for a camera and lens set up. The designation IC2177 actually only refers to the seagulls wings. The "head" (IC2327) is the brightest part. Several open star clusters are also visible. The most prominent one is NGC2335 located on the northern "wing". North is up in this picture. The nebula lies some 1800 light year from earth.

This "bird" is too low on the horizon for imaging at my home location (lat 59deg) but fortunately the Astrotrac/Canon lens set up is portable. I brought it with me on a skiing trip to northern Italy. It was quite windy so I had to dig a hole in the deep snow to get some wind shelter.
